The Italian police has arrested three young men for beating and setting an Indian person on fire who was only sleeping on a train station bench. This happened in a seaside town not so far off from Rome. The victim was 35 years old, and this caused an uproar in Italy, and many debates were happening ever since this incident. Investigators have said that the three young men poured gasoline on the man then set him on fire on early sunday. The man suffered burns more than 40 percent of his body, said Dr. Palombo, a doctor at Sant'Eugenio hospital in Rome. The victim would have to undergo skin graft surgery to avoid any infections. Giorgio Napolitano, President of Italy, told everyone "any display and risk of xenophobia, racism and violence.'' The three suspects were sixteen, nineteen, and twenty nine. Investigators say that the suspects and consumed drugs and alcohol.Carabinieri Maj. Emanuele Gaeta told SKY TG24 TV. "We can exclude racism as a motive because they were so high.'' The top security official, Mr. Maroni, told the press that,"[the Nettuno Violence] isn't a racist attack. It's something worse," he said, a lack of fundamental values in society.
In my opinion, I think that this is actually not a racist attack at all. The victim could have been any race, and everyone would assume that it would be racist. I'm sure the three victims did not think while they were drunk and high that they were going to set the man on fire and beat him up cause he's Indian. I think that they did it just out of pure stupidity and disrespect. Racism is assumed in so many crimes but I believe race doesn't matter at all to the eyes of a killer. Unless it is the KKK, than most crimes are probably done out of anger or hate or whatever the reason it is. In conclusion, I think that Italy is going way over the top with this, and the President should focus on crime in general rather than racism.
